Ronnie O’Sullivan, who advanced to the Players Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday, likened his performances on the World Snooker Tour to “paid practice.”

The world number one defeated Zhou Yuelong 6-2 in Telford despite not being at his best. He had breaks of 136, 73, and 62.

In a successful 2023–24 snooker season, O’Sullivan has won four events, including the coveted Masters and the UK Championship.

The Rocket has also chosen to forego most of the smaller events on the schedule; Judd Trump used a similar strategy at the Welsh Open in Llandudno last week.

However, O’Sullivan, who has withdrawn from games this season due to a variety of health issues, does not believe that playing less has anything to do with his sustained success.

“After that, squeeze in a few frames of snooker; it’s really just a little paid practice.”

On the second day of the Players Championship, Mark Allen defeated Mark Williams 6-3 and advanced to the round of eight with a strong performance.
